I am thankful to have had space this morning to begin to pray and journal about the upcoming Advent season. I was thinking of words and phrases that I hope embody our family’s celebration of Christmas this year: simple, joyful, focused on serving others, welcoming Jesus and others into our home.

I don’t agree with the Nordic idea about no weather being bad, but I do know wearing the right clothes makes dealing with the bad weather easier. After three rainy Fridays in a row, followed by a rainy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and possibly Thursday this week, I am reminded again of how little I can control.

As I read Tara Westover’s memoir, Educated, this past week, I found myself thinking again and again, “No way!” The obstacles Tara overcame from her childhood to be who she is today were so far-fetched, some of them, that one might not believe they could actually happen. The crazy parts began to be more believable when it was revealed that Tara’s father was suffering from mental illness, although I don’t think mental illness could explain away everything.

I like when the realization hits that I am getting the same message from different places in my life. This quote about the barn is on a card I kept from years ago because I love what it says.

The quote’s meaning is similar to the theme, as reflected in the title, of the book I’m currently reading to the kids for school.
